How we test - Baby food

Our laboratory tests of baby food analyze the nutritional content of ready-made baby food. An accredited, independent laboratory, such as the Finnish Measurlabs conducts the laboratory analysis.

The nutritional content analysis includes the following parameters:

  • Energy Value
  • Fatty Acid Distribution
  • Minerals
  • Salt and Sugar Content
  • Harmful Heavy Metals

The energy value includes the total energy content and the distribution between protein, fat, and carbohydrates.

The fatty acid distribution covers about 40 different fatty acids, summarized in the total proportion of polyunsaturated, monounsaturated, and saturated fats, as well as the content of essential fatty acids omega-3 and omega-6.

The minerals include the content of zinc, magnesium, and iron.

Salt is analyzed as sodium chloride, and the sugar content is broken down into glucose, lactose, sucrose, fructose, and maltose.

Harmful substances include lead, cadmium, arsenic, and mercury.

Interpretation and Rating of the Analysis Results

The nutritional content is rated based on general recommendations for nutrient intake for children aged 6–8 months.

In the overall rating, the three main categories—energy content, fatty acids, and minerals—were given equal weight. The fourth rating category, nutrient balance, rewards products with consistently good nutritional content, without imbalances in any of the three main categories.
